We aim to provide an unparalleled opportunity of variations in the interstellar medium (ISM) properties across entire galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere. With the ability to resolve individual star formation events, these data will help to reveal the physics occurring at the smallest scales and its intricate connection to large scale galactic structure and global galaxy evolution.
The cycle of gas condensation, and the resulting star formation and stellar feedback, is the engine for (secular) galaxy evolution and metal enrichment. TYPHOON is uniquely suited for comparisons between optical IFS and low-spatial resolution imaging data, such as with GALEX (UV), Spitzer (Mid-IR), Herschel (Far-IR), sub-mm (e.g., CO), or Radio (e.g., HI).
The large field of view provided by TYPHOON will shed light on the nature between the relationships between ionised, molecular, and atomic reservoirs with both resolved star formation physics and global galaxy parameters.
